Famed ‘Diary’ pulled in Culpepper. Va.; Parent found Anne a little too frank
According to the Culpepper Star Exponent, Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition,” has been pulled from the shelves of Culpeper County Public Schools because a parent was concerned about a previously censored section of the book in which Anne, curious teenage that she was, wrote about her vagina.
Culpepper eighth graders, none of whom even know what a vagina is thanks to cautious parents, will now read the old version of the “Diary” as opposed to the one published in 1995 by the Anne Frank Foundation.
“What we have asked is that this particular edition will not be taught,” said Jim Allen, director of instruction for the school system. “I don’t want to make a big deal out of this. So we listened to the parent and we pulled it.”
Gee, Jim, why not make a big deal out of it? Can any parent come in and complain about any ridiculous thing and get the district to wilt?
It’s a diary written by a young girl during the Holocaust, not “Letters to Penthouse.” Aren’t her uncensored thoughts and feelings relevant to teenagers in Virginia? Couldn’t the uncensored Anne lead to even more dynamic classroom conversation?
Said Allen: “I’m happy when parents get involved with these things because it lets me know that they are really looking and have their kids’ best interest (in mind). And that’s where good parenting and good teaching comes in.”
Not always, Jim. Sometimes parents are just clueless, closed-minded dumbasses.
The Culpepper County School District really needs to grow a pair. Anne herself, would be ashamed.
