Nude photo scandal infects already-diseased Malaysian politics

Malaysia is a pretty conservative country, politically, but what’s going on with Elizabeth Wong seems crazy.
Wong, 37, a leader in the opposition party, has quit all of her positions in government after she was politically assassinated with nude pictures.
The Straits Times reports that Wong announced her decision before a packed press conference, she told reporters she was resigning as the Bukit Lanjan state assemblyman and executive councillor for the Selangor state. She is a first-term assemblyman.
‘I have done no wrong and I am not ashamed of my sexuality as a woman and as a single person. I have broken no law and everyone has a right to privacy,” she said, breaking down in tears.
That’s right. Wong is single, the photos don’t show her in any compromising sexual position – or any sexual position at all – and are believed to have been taken by an ex-boyfriend.
The photographs reportedly do show Wong sleeping with her clothes rumpled and her glasses still on, and half covered by a sarong.
So some asshole invades her privacy and her career is ruined?
Well, yeah, according to Mohamad Khir Toyo, the National Front ex-chief minister of Selangor. In a BBC story, he said, ”She is a single person. How can she allow a man into her room when they are not married? What’s the status of the relationship?”
The Selangor state government headed by chief minister Khalid Ibrahim has yet to indicate if it will accept her resignation. It must also be tendered to the Sultan of Selangor.
Here’s hoping they tell her to stay put.
